The International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) estimates that global semiconductor revenue is expected to grow by 20% this year, with artificial intelligence (AI) chips and memory being the main growth drivers. Next year, with the healthy recovery of demand for communications, industrial and automotive applications, semiconductor revenue will grow by another 20%.
SEMI held a pre-show press conference for the international semiconductor exhibition SEMICON TAIWAN 2024 this afternoon. SEMI Senior Director of Industry Research Zeng Ruiyu analyzed the development trends of the global semiconductor market.
Zeng Ruiyu pointed out that the sales of electronic equipment in the first half of this year will be approximately the same as the same period last year. In the third quarter, it is expected to increase by 4% annually, and the full year will increase by 3% to 5%, slightly lower than the original estimate of 5% to 7%.
Semiconductor revenue in the first half of this year increased by more than 20% compared with the same period last year. Zeng Ruiyu predicts that semiconductor revenue is expected to grow by 20% this year. In addition to rising memory prices and volume, AI chips are also the main growth driver.
Zeng Ruiyu said that semiconductor revenue excluding memory will grow by about 10% this year. If AI-related chip products are excluded, semiconductor revenue this year will only grow by 3%.
Zeng Ruiyu said that as the supply chain inventories of communications, industry and automobiles are approaching the bottom, demand is expected to recover healthily next year, and semiconductor revenue has the opportunity to grow by 20% next year.
He pointed out that the capacity utilization rate of wafer fabs bottomed out in the first quarter of this year and began to gradually recover in the second quarter. It is expected that the capacity utilization rate will reach 70% in the third quarter and will further recover in the fourth quarter.
Zeng Ruiyu said that in the first half of this year, China's investment amount surged by 90% compared with the same period last year, which was not in line with market demand. The main reason is that the United States is worried about adopting stricter controls and actively building enough mature process production capacity; most investment in other countries in the first half of the year is higher than the same period last year. reduce.
Zeng Ruiyu predicts that due to China's massive investment based on geopolitical factors, the global semiconductor equipment market this year is expected to grow slightly by 3% from last year to US$109.5 billion. Next year, driven by advanced logic chips and packaging and testing, the equipment market will grow compared with this year. 16%, to US$127.5 billion.
He said that the compound annual growth rate of semiconductor equipment expenditure in the United States from 2023 to 2027 is expected to reach 22%, that in Europe and the Middle East, 19%, 18% in Japan, 13% in South Korea, and about 9% in Taiwan. China may show a negative trend. growing up.
As for the silicon wafer market, Zeng Ruiyu predicts that silicon wafer shipments are expected to grow quarter by quarter in the second half of this year. However, total shipments are likely to decrease by 3% this year and are expected to recover next year.
