According to Chinese media reports, according to an analysis report released by SEMI, global silicon wafer shipments in 2024 will decrease by 2.7% year-on-year to 12,266 million square inches (MSI), while silicon wafer sales will decrease by 6.5% year-on-year to US$11.5 billion during the same period.
The report shows that in the second half of last year, wafer demand began to recover from the industry's downward cycle in 2023, but inventory adjustments were slow due to weak terminal demand in some segments, which affected wafer fab utilization and wafer shipments for specific applications.
SEMI expects the industry recovery to continue into this year (2025), with stronger improvements in the second half of the year. Lee Chong-wei, chairman of SEMI SMG and vice president of Global Wafers, said that generative artificial intelligence and new data center construction have been the driving force for state-of-the-art foundries and storage devices such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM), but most other end markets are still recovering from excess inventory; as many customers pointed out in their financial reports, the industrial semiconductor market is still in a strong inventory adjustment, which has affected global silicon wafer shipments.
