(Central News Agency reporter Zhang Jianzhong, Hsinchu, 22nd) Silicon photonics will become a key technology for the future AI industry. SEMI called for the establishment of a silicon photonics industry alliance, and the Optoelectronics Technology Industry Association also established the International Silicon Photonics Heterogeneous Integration Alliance. The members of the two alliances have a high degree of overlap. More than 10 manufacturers have joined the two alliances at the same time, and the industry players hope to integrate and concentrate resources to accelerate development.
With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), the requirements for high-performance data processing and transmission have increased significantly. Optical signals have the characteristics of high bandwidth, low power and long transmission distance. Therefore, silicon photonics is regarded as a key technology for AI in the future. In data centers, cloud computing and other fields. It is estimated that the output value of the silicon photonics market will reach US$7.86 billion in 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 25.7%.
Silicon photonics has a promising future, but it requires cross-domain cooperation in materials, optics, electronics and manufacturing. The Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) and the Photonics Technology Association (PIDA) have established alliances to integrate industry, academia and research. resources and accelerate technological development.
The SEMI Silicon Photonics Industry Alliance, which was established under the call of SEMI, is initiated by TSMC (2330), the leading foundry, and ASE (3711), a major packaging and testing company. The alliance also includes World Advanced Semiconductor, MediaTek, Qian Ding Optoelectronics, Broway, and AUO. More than 30 companies from semiconductor manufacturing, IC design, optical communications, panels, testing, system manufacturing, equipment and silicon wafer manufacturers participated, including , TradeLink, Pan-Chips, Foxconn, Quanta, MSI, Xinyun, and GlobalWafers.
The International Silicon Photonics Heterogeneous Integration Alliance established by PIDA integrates the heterogeneous integration silicon photonics chip R&D center of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and more than 30 semiconductor manufacturing, packaging and semiconductor companies such as UMC, ASE, GlobalWafers, Qianding Optoelectronics, Xinyun, and TradeLink. Manufacturers of measurement, silicon wafers, optical communications and equipment have joined. It is understood that PIDA has also contacted TSMC, hoping to get TSMC to join the alliance.
The members of the two alliances have a high degree of overlap, including more than 10 manufacturers such as Shangquan Fiber Optics, Qiancai Technology, Guanghong Jiansheng, Qianding Optoelectronics, TradeLink, GlobalWafers, Win Semiconductors, Xinyun, ASE, Hejing and iST. Join two alliances at the same time.
To avoid resource dispersion and duplication of investment, industry players hope that the two major silicon photonics alliances can integrate, concentrate resources and expand scale to accelerate technological development. However, there is currently no cooperation plan between the two alliances, and subsequent developments remain to be seen. (Editor: Lin Shuyuan) 1131222
